As the 2005-2006 school year comes close to starting, here are some ideas for ways in which students can get involved in the local LGBTQA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, ally) community in the Triad:
- Go to the meetings of your high school's or college's Gay-Straight Alliance, Diversity or Pride group. Don't have one? Start one! More info: www.glsen.org
- Learn more about current legislation and get involved with Equality NC
- Get involved with GLSEN Winston-Salem or GLSEN Greensboro
- Get involved with PFLAG Winston-Salem and attend their first annual awards dinner in September.
- Attend the NC Pride Festival on September 24th in Raleigh/Durham
- Help organize with The 2008 March on Washington Piedmont/Triad Organizing Effort
- Get involved with QCYNT, the Queer College & Youth Network of the Triad (a project of Alternative Resources of the Triad/OutGreensboro.com)
- Volunteer with Triad Health Project
- Get involved with your high school's or college's Student Government Association and sponsor pro-LGBT legislation such as resolutions urging your school or college to add "sexual orientation" or "gender identity" to its non-discrimination statement if they don't already have them listed.
