According to an article published by the Charlotte (FL) Sun Herald, the Reverend Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church and several of his church's members will protest the formation of a new gay-straight alliance at a high school. Students and those at the school say their strategy will be to simply ignore the protestors. Phelps and his group of church members will march at Port Charlotte High School on Monday at 7:30am and then move their protest to the school board office at 8:30am. School district officials have said that the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office will take security measures jsut in case anything gets out of hand. According to the article:
Asher Levine, president of the two-month-old alliance, said members of the GSA and the student body plan to dress in white to represent purity. They will also take a vow of silence for the day. "That's our way of basically standing up for ourselves," Levine said. "We're looking to approach this nuisance in a more mature manner." Levine and others started the alliance as a way for students of different sexual orientations to discuss issues and support each other.
In order to cut back on any possible disputes, students will not be allowed outside the school building during the Phelps protest. Churches in the area, as well as military veterans, have expressed sadness that a group would come to their area spreading hate in the name of God. Technorati Tags: , , , , , ,
