The Supreme Court, Alito & why youth should care.Equality MySpace Logo
I know many youth who could really care less about the Supreme Court or the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to a position on it. I know many youth who have no idea who Judge Alito is or who he might replace on the Court if he is confirmed by the Senate.

Well, I'll make it easy on you (although I should make you Google "Alito" lol). Judge Samuel Alito is President Bush's nominee to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sanda Day O'Connor. Alito is now undergoing Senate confirmation hearing where he, oh so gently, slid past questions pertaining to LGBT people and LGBT equality.

Many of you might wonder why you should even care about politics, or the government, or the Supreme Court even. I mean... some of you aren't even old enough to vote and I bet many of you who are old enough feel either disenfranchised, left out or simply that politics doesn't interest you. One thing to realize though is that it takes the action and education of the citizens in order for a democracy to work. You must be aware and you must use your education and awareness on the issues to keep your government accountable to the you, the People.

Now, about this whole thing about the Supreme Court... and I won't take up too much more of your time. You should care and you should make yourself aware of the issues and learn about Alito because, if confirmed, he will have a life-term post on the Supreme Court. His opinions, his beliefs, his views on LGBT people and rights... all of those things will impact the decisions of the Court for decades to come. What Alito might say or do as a member of the Court has the potential to affect you, your children and your children's children.

I urge you to become, in some way, involved with politics and I also urge you to stay aware of the issues. Feeling bored one day? Turn on MSNBC or CNN... flip over to C-SPAN or C-SPAN 2 and watch the Senate and the House of Representatives. Sound geeky? Yeah it does... but look at who runs the country.
