According to an article published by the Washington Blade, the United States has aligned itself with such countries as Iran, Zimbabwe, China, Cameroon and other traditional US rivals in a vote on whether to allow the International Lesbian and Gay Association and the Danish Association of Gays and Lesbians to join the United Nation's Economic and Social Council. The International Lesbian and Gay Association has tried for numerous years to be recognized by the U.N. According to the article:
The Brussels-based International Lesbian & Gay Association and the Danish Association of Gay & Lesbians applied for consultative status on the council, giving the organizations an avenue as non-government groups to participate in discussions among members of the U.N. Nearly 3,000 groups enjoy this status. The U.S. voted to reject the applications, a reversal of its 2002 position when it moved to support the International Lesbian & Gay Association's request to have its status reviewed. Officials gave no explanation for the change. “It is deeply disturbing that, at the U.N., the United States has shifted gears toward an aggressive stance against human rights for LGBT people,” said Paula Ettelbrick, executive director of the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission.
===== Could some body tell me how the United States can call itself the bastion of freedom, democracy and liberty when it votes to restrict the freedom of others and make certain portion's of its own population and the world population second-class citizens? Don't get me wrong... I love the United States. I'm one of the most patriotic persons you might ever meet in your life. There comes a point, however, in which a person starts to realize that our ideals of liberty and justice for all have not yet been met. At that point it is up to every individual to continue to strive for the goal where all people will at last be free. Shame on the United States. Technorati Tags: , , , , , ,
