In the ultimate sign of bigotry and prejudice, the Virginia Senate today approved a constitutional amendment which would ban gay marriage in the Commonwealth as well as ban other civil commitments from being recognized. The Virginia House of Delegates had already approved teh measure when the Senate voted today by a margin of 28 to 11. The measure will head to voters in November when it will be placed on the ballot. Looks like majority stupidity will once again rule the day. Imagine putting slavery on to a ballot for voters to decide. What woul dhave happened there? How about women's suffrage or child labor or the aims of the Civil Rights Movement? I'm sorry to say this, but I have said it before... sometimes the majority is stupid and does not know what is best. That is why, in America, the majority may rule, but not at the expense of the minority. The minority has rights too. Today is a sad day for the LGBT and straight allied citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Maybe my prediction of the amendments approval by the People will prove false. Equality Virginia... time to get to work! Technorati Tags: , , , , , ,
