According to an article published by the Chicago Tribune, Northwestern University, located near Chicago in Evanston, has agreed to help host Gay Games VII during July in Chicago. The organizers of the Gay Games approached the university about using some of its facilities and it agreed to help out. According to the article:
Events will be held in Welsh-Ryan Arena, the Sports Pavilion and Aquatic Center, and outdoor tennis courts, said Alan Cubbage, the school's vice president for university relations. Sports will include tennis, squash, racquetball, diving, water polo and wrestling, he said. Games organizers approached Northwestern about using the facilities, and the school was happy to help, Cubbage said. "It's essentially a rental," he said. "We're just providing a venue."
Northwestern University says that it is happy to receive the exposure. The Games, however, have sparked controversy with some groups threatening to boycott the sponsors of the Games. A member of the Evanston Human Relations Committee has said that he does not fear any negative effects for the city because of the Games. The Los Angeles Police Department last week gave approval to a request to let officers march in uniform during the Games opening ceremony. Chicago police said that they would honor such a request if one were made (earlier post). Technorati Tags: , , , , , ,
